Gojkovic in Greece – Meeting with Greek President and Hellenic Parliament President, Parliamentary Cooperation Office Established

In the course of her official visit to Greece, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic had separate meetings with the President of the Hellenic Parliament Nikolaos Voutsis and the President of Greece Prokopis Pavlopoulos in which the officials highlighted the historically close and friendly relations between the two states and people which makes it all the more important to cultivate and advance them.


The two heads of parliament signed a Memorandum of Cooperation setting up a Parliamentary Cooperation Office to promote cooperation in the spheres of Euro-integration, economy and culture, as well as on the multilateral level through regular meetings.

Gojkovic opined that this is a historic visit since it is the first visit by a National Assembly Speaker to Greece since 1991 and that the Parliamentary Cooperation Office raises the level of parliamentary relations, in the context of 135 years of diplomatic relations and 150 years of the first alliance agreement.
Gojkovic said that the two parliaments are following the level of relations achieved at the intergovernmental level saying how pleased she was Parliament President Voutsis’ visit to Belgrade in December 2016 opened the door to promote relations, which was concretized by the signing of the Memorandum.

Parliament President Nikolaos Voutsis agreed that the Memorandum is very important for the improvement of overall relations stressing that cooperation between the states could stand to be improved, and in that context he had positive expectations from the work of the intergovernmental High Council for Cooperation between Serbia and Greece.

They also discussed the improvement of relations in the fields of economy, energy, infrastructure, tourism, and spoke about migration and other challenges in the region, which is why, Voutsis said, we should be careful and work together to maintain stability and peace.

Gojkovic also met with Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos who congratulated Serbian president elect Aleksandar Vucic, while the National Assembly Speaker thanked him and commended the initiative for President Pavlopoulos’ visit to Serbia.

Pavlopoulos wished Serbia success in the EU accession process, saying Greece was one of the countries who wished to see it completed quickly.

Gojkovic stressed that Serbia and Greece are historically close friends, that Greece continues to support Serbia in matters of importance and thanked it for respecting Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty based in international law, highlighting the country’s dedication to dialogue.

The National Assembly Speaker thanked the Greek President for the sincere support of Serbia’s EU accession, stressing that Serbia is aware that the path is not an easy one, but is dedicated to the talks, opening of chapters and internal reform.

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia went to Greece at the invitation of Parliament President Voutsis, and will also meet with the members of the Greece-Serbia Parliamentary Friendship Group and representatives of the parliamentary groups.
