Gojkovic Meets with Heads of Parliament of Spain, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Albania and Slovenia

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic, currently taking part in the Conference of Parliament Speakers of EU Member States and Candidate Countries in Tallinn, had a series of bilateral meetings with a number of parliament speakers to discuss developing parliamentary cooperation, intensifying relations and Euro-integration.

Gojkovic met with the President of the Spanish Congress of Deputies Ana Pastor and took the opportunity to thank Spain for its principled position and support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The President of the Spanish Congress of Deputies reaffirmed that Spain would not recognize the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija and that EU enlargement can only be extended to states.

Gojkovic also met with the President of the Austrian Parliament Wolfgang Sobotka and thanked Austria for its active and constant support of Serbia’s Euro-integration mentioning that Austria’s Presidency of the EU Council in the second half of the year would be very significant for Serbia. Sobotka confirmed that the EU enlargement policy would be one of the priorities of Austria’s Presidency of the EU Council and also accepted the Serbian Assembly Speaker’s invitation to visit Serbia later this year.

Gojkovic also spoke with the Speaker of the Czech Parliament Radek Vondracek who said that the Czech Republic would like to see the EU spread to include the Western Balkans and that Serbia can in that respect count on the full support of the countries of the Visegrad Group. The officials said that this year marks the centenary of diplomatic relations between Serbia and the Czech Republic which is an excellent opportunity to advance the relations between the two countries by intensifying parliamentary cooperation.

Gojkovic also met with the Marshal of the Polish Sejm Marek Kuchcinski. The heads of parliament expressed readiness to deepen parliamentary cooperation and agreed to, in light of the centenary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, arrange an exchange of visits to better advance bilateral relations.

In the meeting with the Speaker of the Albanian Parliament Gramoz Ruci, the officials agreed that it is important for the two countries to develop all types of cooperation of mutual interest, especially in the domain of European integration. Ruci said that Serbia’s experience of the Euro-integration process could serve as an important model and accepted the invitation for a visit to Serbia in view of the fact that interparliamentary cooperation can give a strong impulse to the development of relations between the two countries.

Gojkovic also discussed the further development of parliamentary cooperation with the President of the Slovenian National Council Alojz Kovsca who stressed that Slovenia fully supports Serbia’s EU accession and is ready to offer expert assistance especially for the use of EU funds. Gojkovic invited the President of the Slovenian National Council to visit Serbia which would be an excellent opportunity to intensify cooperation at the parliamentary level, as well as in other areas, such as the economy.
