European Integration Committee Delegation Takes Part in Interparliamentary Meeting Organised by EP Committee on Constitutional Affairs

The Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs and Committee Deputy Chairman Milan Radin took part in the online interparliamentary meeting entitled “Institutional Consequences of EU Enlargement Negotiations”, organised by the European Parliament’s Committee on Constitutional Affairs on 2 September 2025.

The meeting was attended by the members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Constitutional Affairs, representatives of EU member states and candidate countries. The aim of the meeting (ICM) was to exchange views and opinions with national parliaments concerning the draft report on the 'Institutional consequences of the EU enlargement negotiations', of rapporteur Sandro Gozi.

The Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs thanked the MEPs and the members of the national parliaments for their support of EU enlargement. She stressed Draft Report by Sandro Gozi’s draft report. She pointed out that the unanimity of the European Union regarding each "step" on the path to EU membership, primarily referring to the opening of clusters, poses a major problem for candidate countries, especially if the veto of individual member states, due to bilateral problems with the candidate country, is used as a means to block accession negotiations. She said that for almost four years now, the European Commission has been stressing that Serbia is ready to open a cluster, but that has not happened yet. She informed the participants of the meeting that Euroscepticism in Serbia is growing. In that regard, she stressed that it is difficult for politicians to communicate with the citizens about the benefits of Serbia's accession negotiations in these conditions, when there are no positive decisions.
