Edin Djerlek Calls on MPs from Around the World to Show Solidarity and Unity in Facing Global Problems and Protecting Every Vulnerable Individual

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and head of the National Assembly delegation at the 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, Edin Djerlek, took part in the plenary session, in the general debate on the topic "Upholding humanitarian norms and supporting humanitarian action in times of crisis".

In his speech, he stressed that "international humanitarian law is not just a legal instrument, but a moral compass for humanity" and added that "the protection of life, health and the integrity of people in general, whether in armed conflicts or natural disasters, must be an imperative for the actions of the states within whose borders any form of suffering or hardship occurs, as well as for the entire global community."

He pointed out that, although interconnected and powerful, the globalised world is very vulnerable. He called on parliamentarians from all over the world to unite in finding solutions to problems that transcend individual parliaments and states. He stressed the importance of parliaments and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, emphasising that “respect for humanitarian law does not depend only on the courts and governments of states, but also on parliaments, because parliaments are institutions that represent the voice of the people and the guardians of the rule of law”. “For more than a hundred years, the Inter-Parliamentary Union has regularly reminded that respect for international humanitarian law is not a choice but a duty for all of us”, underlined Djerlek.

"The responsibility of the individual is reflected in understanding the world we live in, and the responsibility of international and interparliamentary organisations is in coordinating aid and responding to crises," the National Assembly Deputy Speaker pointed out, adding that "multilateral cooperation is of crucial importance because it represents not only the scope of our joint activism, but is also a test of our common humanity."

He stressed that "we have a moral duty to be the voice of those who cannot or are not allowed to speak out at this moment, of all those who suffer and are enduring or living the consequences of our joint actions or inactions, through our engagement, speech and actions."

He pointed out that MPs should be reminders that respect for human dignity is the foundation of every civilized state and a responsible international order. Cooperation, dialogue and consistency, in his opinion, are the basic prerequisites for respecting humanitarian law.

"The global world brings global responsibilities. The first of these is that we, in solidarity and together, understand that the suffering or misery of each individual is at the same time the pain and problem of all of us, but also that part of the solution is in our hands," concluded Djerlek.
