Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Members Meet with European Institute for Holocaust and Totalitarianism Research History Professors from Madrid

Members of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region met today with history professors of the European Institute for Holocaust and Totalitarianism Research from Madrid, Kingdom of Spain, currently in visiting Belgrade.

Committee Chairman Dragan Stanojevic briefly informed the guests about the activities implemented in Serbia intended to foster the culture of remembrance of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the founding of the UN, as well as the culture of remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust. Stanojevic spoke to them about the Serbian diaspora in the region and the world, stressing that though the Serbian diaspora is the most numerous in the region its status is difficult and complicated, burdened by assimilation and discrimination. He emphasised that today a revision of history and the role that the Serbian people played in the First and Second World Wars is underway.

The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ljiljana Niksic, thanked the Spanish historians, who are in a study visit to Serbia, for the principled position of the Kingdom of Spain on the issue of our country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and stressed the importance of cultivating a culture of remembrance in the region.

Carlos Vazquez, president of the European Institute for Holocaust and Totalitarianism Research from Madrid, said that the delegation had the opportunity to learn about the facts during their ten-day stay in the region and that as professors it was important for them to learn about the events in Jasenovac, so that they could talk about them to others who do not know much about it.

During the discussion, which was attended by members and deputy members of the Committee Dusan Maric, Aleksandar Cotric, Dalibor Scekic, Bojan Torbica, Tanja Radjenovic and Dr Ivan Rajicic, the attending discussed the facts that support the fact that there was no genocide committed in Srebrenica, as well as historical revisionism. Once again, they thanked Spain for its support on the issue of our southern province, as well as the Spanish historians for everything they do to ensure that the events of the past are not forgotten.

This meeting was an opportunity for the director of the Diana Budisavljevic Institute and advocate for the Jasenovac resolution, Gojko Roncevic Mraovic, to present an honorary diploma to the president of the European Institute, Vasquez, and for Strahinja Kurdulija to present him with a map of the genocide committed against Serbs in World War II.
