Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Chairman on Terrorist Attacks in Kumanovo

On the behalf of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, I express great concern and solidarity with about 5,000 members of the Serbian minority living in Kumanovo. Extending condolences to all Macedonian citizens for the victims of the terrorist attacks, we express solidarity and deep pain for the suffering of the Serbian minority in Macedonia in these conflicts.

Considering that the part of the city where the terrorists were engaged is populated by Serbian people, especially in the vicinity of the former Serbian school “Vuk Karadzic”, and that many of them had to leave their homes, we expect that in consultation with our embassy in Macedonia they will be given adequate assistance and housing. To that end, I have spoken with Ivan Stoilkovic, Serbian MP at the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia and President of the Democratic Party of Serbs in Macedonia. He explained the current situation of Serbs in Kumanovo. Kumanovo and its vicinity are part of Macedonia that has been inhabited by Serbs for centuries and any violence or terrorism could affect their survival in the area.

We expect the authorities to do all in their power to ensure the security of Serbs living in that part of Macedonia. Expressing solidarity with all Macedonian citizens endangered by the terrorist attacks, we expect that peace will soon be re-established in the area and that the members of the Serbian minority would be able to survive in the area and preserve their ethnic identity.
