Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Chairman and Member Talk to President of Central Council of Serbs in Germany

On Friday, 15 May 2015, the Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Prof. Dr Janko Veselinovic and Committee member Aleksandar Cotric received Milan Cobanov, President of the Central Council of Serbs in Germany.

Milan Cobanov highlighted several segments relating to the Serbian diaspora in Germany and explained the activities of the Serbian organisation he heads. He pointed out the impressive numbers and structural diversity of the Serbian diaspora in Germany, as well as the stages of their emigration from the mother country, the second and third generation, and those who moved in the 1990s from the territory of the former SFRY, saying that the assimilation process has taken its toll. The Central Council of Serbs, founded eight years ago as a volunteer organisation, advocates the interests and ideas of all Serbs living in Germany, which at the same time makes them important for Serbia. As a unique organisation, the Central Council of Serbs tackles integrations issues of Serbs in Germany with a special focus on the Serbs’ position toward the German Government. Namely, as a migrant organisation it can propose developmental projects before the German Government which approves their funding. The projects can also concern investments into the country of origin, which means the diaspora could assist the economic development of the Republic of Serbia. Cobanov then proceeded to give information and explanations relating to long-term plans of the Republic of Germany and its attitude to civil society and migrants and why the position of Serbs is important both for the Serbs living in Germany and the Republic of Serbia. Considering the specificities of the functioning and rules of the German provinces, he attempted to explain the possibilities for learning the Serbian language. To the question whether the Central Council of Serbs has at its disposal an up-to-date database on the Serbian diaspora in Germany, Cobanov said that there are ways to obtain official statistics such as analyses and primary surveys.

At the end of the meeting, the officials agreed that the Committee should dedicate a sitting in autumn to the status of the Serbian diaspora in Germany.
