Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Chairman and Deputy Chairman Meet with Representatives of Serbian Youth from Croatia

The Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, Janko Veselinovic and Miodrag Linta respectively, received today, at the National Assembly, the representatives of Serbian youth from Croatia currently visiting the Republic of Serbia.

Committee Chairman Janko Veselinovic welcomed the Serbian youth from Croatia, stressing that the Committee is duty-bound to take care of the young people in the region. Serbia is proud of the fact that it has a serious diaspora and Serbs in the region who love their mother state, which obligates the National Assembly and the MPs to care for their status and rights, said Veselinovic.

Committee Deputy Chairman Miodrag Linta said that there are Serbs in Croatia and it is the mother state’s duty to spare no efforts to help them, especially the young people to become the Serbian elite in Croatia. These meetings should become a tradition and the youth should address the Serbian institutions every year and suggest measures which could help solve the problems of Serbs in Croatia, said Linta.

The representatives of the Serbian youth in Croatia briefed the hosts on their problems, listing as chief ones education, which is the cornerstone and core of their existence, discrimination in the employment process, lack of media information, and problems in the sphere of culture.

The Head of Municipality of Krnjak Dejan Mihajlovic stressed that there are a great many Serbs in Croatia, but many of them choose not to declare themselves as Serbs. The Serbian youth in Croatia expects the mother state to push for an improvement of the status of national minorities in the countries in the region and more frequent official visits by Serbian dignitaries to Croatia, said Mihajlovic.

The Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region said that the Serbian institutions, especially the National Assembly, would work on issues relating to the status and rights of national minorities, primarily the status of the Serbian youth in Croatia.

The visit of the Serbian Youth from Croatia to Belgrade and Novi Sad was organised by the Metropolitanate of Zagreb and Ljubljana and the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Zagreb, in cooperation with Serbian organisations in Croatia.
