Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Chairman Talks to Former Officers of the Nevesinje Brigade

Miodrag Linta, Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, and Committee member Aleksandar Markovic met today at the National Assembly House with the former officers of the Nevesinje brigade of the MRS Herzegovina Corps to speak about commemorating the St. Demetrius battles of 1992 and 1994.

The former officers thanked the officials for the meeting at the National Assembly House, which is the first official reception they have ever had in Serbia and a great honour.

They spoke about the four war years during which they defended the city of Nevesinje and parts of East Herzegovina on two occasions. The brigade lost 476 soldiers during the war, while over 1800 were wounded. They said that freedom, unity, mutual respect and trust were they key of their success in the battlefield and that they were always aware that giving up was not an option.

Linta thanked the former officers for the visit in the course of which he was thoroughly briefed on the brigade’s battle activities. He believes that the creation of the Republic of Srpska to which the Nevesinje brigade had been instrumental needs to be spoken about a lot more in Serbia. Linta also said that the myths, untruths and fake history publicized by Zagreb and Sarajevo need to be quashed and the Nevesinje brigade should be mentioned more often in the Serbian public.

“If it weren’t for the glorious victories of the Nevesinje brigade in the two St. Demetrius battles the enemy soldiers would have established the borders of the criminal NDH on Drina”, said Linta.

The meeting was attended by Colonel Novica Gusic, commander of the Nevesinje brigade from the begging of the war in 1992 to August 1994; Colonel Zoran Purkovic, commander of the battalion until August 1994, and since then commander of the Nevesinje brigade; Colonel Zoran Pejanovic, commander of the 1st battalion of the Nevesinje brigade; Colonel Milenko Lalovic, commander of the 3rd battalion of the Nevesinje brigade; Colonel Nikola Guzina, commander of the 5th battalion of the Nevesinje brigade; Colonel Zoran Janjic, commander of the air-defence division of the Nevesinje brigade and Captain Ranko Siljegovic, commander of the artillery division of the Nevesinje brigade.
