Deputy Speaker Ragus Meets with Head of Russian Federal Assembly Federation Council Cooperation Group with National Assembly

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Foreign Affairs Committee Chairperson Marina Ragus met today with Yelena Afanasyeva, Head of the Group for cooperation with the National Assembly in the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and member of the Committee on International Affairs, currently visiting Belgrade.


Ragus and Afanasyeva discussed advancing parliamentary cooperation at all levels, as well as t5he current developments in the world and the Western Balkans.

Deputy Speaker Ragus wished the guest that her country would soon achieve a just and sustainable peace and reiterated that Serbia respects the rules of public international law. She added that Serbia will not impose sanctions on the Russian Federation, and that it is oriented towards the cultivation of history, tradition and culture, and against historical revisionism. Ragus informed Afanasyeva in detail about current developments in Serbia, especially the difficult position of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija and the challenges facing Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She thanked the Russian Federation for the support it provides to our country and our national interests in international forums, emphasising that Serbia pursues an independent policy, remains militarily neutral, and does not deviate from friendly relations with its international partners. Informing her Russian colleague about current developments that may raise tensions in the Western Balkans, Ragus stressed that Serbia will continue to fight for its national interests.

The Head of the Group for cooperation with the National Assembly in the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and member of the Committee on International Affairs Yelena Afanasyeva thanked Deputy Speaker Ragus for the information provided and stressed the importance of preserving traditional values and protecting historical memory in today's world. She thanked the host, on behalf of the Russian people, for the presence of the Serbian President at the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Ragus and Afanasyeva also discussed parliamentary cooperation between the two countries within the framework of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
