Conference Held on the Role of the Parliament in Monitoring Policies from a Gender Perspective

Today, the National Assembly House hosted a conference on the Role of the Parliament in Monitoring Policies from a Gender Perspective, organised by the Gender Equality Committee in cooperation with the OSCE Mission to Serbia.

In addition to the members of the Gender Equality Committee, the conference was attended by representatives of the parliaments of Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Assembly of AP Vojvodina. The conference was opened by the Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia’s Democratization Department, Karin Wagner, who was pleased to see that so many delegations of the countries in the region have responded to the invitation and emphasised the importance of establishing regional cooperation. Falloni stressed the importance of including a gender perspective into public institutions, as well as promoting this crucial social topic.

MP Jelena Travar Miljevic applauded the OSCE Mission’s initiative to hold a gathering on the role of the parliament in monitoring policies from a gender perspective, emphasising the importance of openly discussing gender equality.

The participants were also greeted by the Executive Director of the CEE Network for Gender Issues Sonja Lokar who spoke of the Slovenian parliament’s experiences on the Role of the Gender Equality Committee in Monitoring Policies from a Gender Perspective – Best Practice, underlining the importance of the legal framework providing equal opportunities for both men and women in society. She also mentioned the parliament’s monitoring role in the implementation of laws ensuring gender equality in all social spheres.

Mirjana Pajvancic, Professor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Novi Sad, also took part in the conference, stressing the importance of employing all the instruments of parliamentary oversight over the implementation of laws, such as organising public hearings, adopting conclusions and recommendations and requesting regular topical reports from the Gender Equality Directorate of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy.

Once the panelists had completed their addresses, the participants were presented a handbook titled Using gender sensitive budgeting as a tool to monitor policies from a gender perspective which provides guidelines for the introduction of a gender perspective into the parliament’s work.

In the debate, the participants exchanged experiences and examples of good practice of their respective institutions, which was the purpose of the conference.
