Conclusion of the Meeting of Delegations of the National Assembly and the Arab Republic of Egypt: Serbia Should Be the Gate to the Balkans for Egypt, and Egypt Should Be the Gate to Africa for Serbia

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic and the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Egypt, Dubravka Filipovski met with Ambassador Dr Badr Abdel Aty, Assistant Minister for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt and Ghada Shalaby, Vice Minister at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquity of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic spoke about the traditionally good relations between Serbia and Egypt, which are constantly on the rise, and expressed hope that in addition to tourism and politics, the field of economy and education would receive the attention they deserve in the future cooperation between the two countries.

He reminded the guests of Serbia’s strategic foreign policy goal - full membership in the European Union and development of regional cooperation. He stressed that Serbia is enjoying excellent cooperation with all major world powers, but also pays special attention to improving cooperation with the members of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Speaking about the open issue between Belgrade and Pristina, Obradovic thanked Egypt for its principled position on the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, adding that, thanks to the state leadership’s wise policy, 18 countries withdrew their previous recognition of the independence of that part of Serbia’s territory.

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Egypt Dubravka Filipovski said that the new legislature’s group boasts 38 members, much more than in the previous one, which clearly shows that an increasing number of MPs are aware of the importance of improving cooperation with Egypt.

Dr Badr Abdel Aty, Assistant Minister for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, also believes that the relations between the two countries are following an upward trend. However, he added that the younger generations in Egypt did not know much about modern Serbia, and vice versa, and he agreed with Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic that we should insist on improving cooperation in the field of education, which will contribute to the rapprochement of the two nations through contact between young people. He also pointed out that there is ample room to foster connections and cooperation between Egyptian and Serbian companies and businessmen operating in the field of agriculture, IT industry and infrastructure, which Egypt wants to modernize.

Ghada Shalaby, Vice Minister at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquity of the Arab Republic of Egypt, spoke about the consequences of the pandemic, which had a negative impact on tourism, and thanked the Serbian tourists who visited Egypt, which is very important for the country’s tourism as Serbian tourists are the fourth largest group visiting Egyptian tourist destinations.

The officials agreed that Serbia should be the gate to the Balkans for Egypt, and Egypt for Serbia the gate to Africa.
