Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Committee and European Integration Committee Chairpersons Meet with Beekeeping Organisations of Serbia Alliance Representatives

Chairman of the Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Committee Aleksandar Senic and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Natasa Vuckovic met today, at the National Assembly House, with representatives of the Alliance of Beekeeping Organisations of Serbia.

The President of the Alliance, Dr Rodoljub Zivadinovic shared the problems troubling the beekeepers in Serbia, among them the inadequate interpretation of the Veterinary Medicine Law by the Veterinary Directorate of the Ministry ofAgriculture, Forestry and Water Management. The request of the Alliance of Beekeeping Organisations, among other things, states that a consensus should be reached on the further implementation of health care measures on the bee population, which would be regulated by an Animal Health Care Programme modelled on other European countries. The implementation of regulations that can be found nowhere else in Europe, said Zivadinovic, endangers one of the most prospective agricultural branches so this problem needs to be addressed, especially in view of the demands made of Serbia in the European accession process. Zivadinovic also pointed out that the veterinarians who control the health of bees should undergo continuous education so as to ensure a timely application of adequate measures in the medical treatment of bees.

Responding to the requests made by Rodoljub Zivadinovic on the behalf of the Alliance of Beekeeping Organisations, Aleksandar Senic and Natasa Vuckovic explained that the National Assembly can, as part of its control duties over the executive, check the degree of harmonisation of the regulations with European legislation. The two committee chairpersons said that the harmonisation of domestic and European regulations in the sphere of agriculture can be very demanding adding that they would ask the Ministry and Veterinary Directorate, within their scope and the institute of parliamentary questions, for explanations and inform the Alliance of Beekeeping Organisations of Serbia about them.

The meeting was also attended by Irena Jolovic and Radivoje Rankovic, Alliance members.
