The sitting was held to mark 3 December - International Day of Persons with Disabilities, with the topic: Remove the obstacles, open the doors – inclusion for everyone.
The Chairperson of the Committee on Labour, Social Issues, Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction Milica Dronjak listed the problems and obstacles, such as inaccessible buildings and lack of information, which persons with disabilities (PWD) deal with every day. She also pointed out the existence of social barriers and the need to raise social awareness on PWD needs.
The Chairman of the Committee on Spatial Planning, Transport, Infrastructure and Telecommunications Dejan Radenkovic shared the Committee’s readiness to, within its authority, discuss the needs and suggestions of associations of persons with disabilities from the aspect of removing architectural barriers which would speed up their social inclusion.
State Secretary at the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Policy Brankica Jankovic informed the participants of the Ministry’s legislative and project activities aimed at improving the position of PWD.
The participants were also addressed by Gordana Rajkov, President of the Centre for Independent Living of PWD of Serbia, who applauded the establishment of the informal parliamentary group at the National Assembly which is to tackle PWD issues.
The need to improve the existing legislation regulating the position of PWD was also discussed by representatives of the National Organisation of PWD of Serbia, representatives of the Alliance of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing of Serbia and the Alliance of the Blind, representatives of the Ministry of Construction and Urban Planning, Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic and representatives of the office of the Commissioner for Protection of Equality.

The sitting was held with the support of the National Democratic Institute in Serbia.
